This bearhug is clearly the SUPERIOR BEARHUG in the whole comic book!
Lex Luthor's latest scheme for the demise of Superman involves the gathering "particles and pieces of Galactic Matter -- -- until (there was) enough to build a MAN" and with the stars in proper conjunction . . . bring to life the GALACTIC GOLEM!!
Secretly implanting Superman with a galactic force, Lex has the Galactic Golem crave on the Man of Steel.
Also using a voice box inserted in the Golem, Lex speaks to the attacked Superman as if the Golem were talking himself.
May not be the best art like done by John Byrne or Tom Grummet, but this is still the Best Bearhug in the comic!
And it's the closest we'll ever see to a bearhug from the Parasite . . . |

Superman's 70s Bear-Hugs:
A while ago I got "Superman in the Seventies", a comic that collects particular issues from that decade/era. And even though I remembered ONE in particular, there were also a few others.
Superman is in one of them.
About this edition . . . it is a good comic collection, but it's not all that great. It was from the 70s so the art cannot be as great as the 90s and 2000s, but it's just most of the stories are the disappointment. Since this is a selection, not all the stories have a proper resolution, and there are times when Superman fights an enemy who is either pointless and has no actual reason for a fight (like "Terra-man") or deluded/mixed up ("Superboy", "Captain Thunder").
But it has its good moments too (besides the bearhugs), so it's up to anyone's opinion whether it's a great book or not. |
