After 11 attempts, several mistakes, a few revisions, dozens of times I didn't think I had gotten something right and a digital revisioning . . . at long last here is my 4th illustration of Bearman bearhugging He-man!!
I must apologize for not uploading this sooner because:
a) Every so often I would make a mistake that would make me have to redo the whole page on another sheet again
b) the shadow near the top which almost comes up from scanning
c) internet wasn't working when I had completed it so I couldn't upload it straight away.
But Finally . . . it's DONE!
TOP: based on Mongul bearhugging Superman (ID 1946) - Bearman's head was originally smaller (too small), his eyes and brows were hard to get right almost each time and the hairs on his arms originally faced the other direction.
LEFT CENTER: from Mongul crushing Superman/Kal-El (ID 9530) - not happy with He-Man's left arm-cuff, but could have been worse and isn't a big deal nor the main attraction.
RIGHT CENTER: Also Mongul bearhugging Superman (ID 1947) - very difficult finding the right posture for He-Man's legs, also moved up Bearman's arms after being so (originally) low. He-man is traced from another (non-bearhug) episode.
BOTTOM LEFT: Own hand-drawing, traced several times.
BOTTOM CENTER: Bearman hand-drawn, He-man was also originally hand-drawn, but is now modeled after Superman being zapped by Geo-Force after 10th page ("Adventures of Superman" #564), with several tests of size and angle done to achieve satisfaction.
BOTTOM RIGHT: Bearman hand-drawn, He-Man eventually based on Concussion bearhugging Superman (ID 7813) after previous postures didn't seem to work. He-man's face here is actually extracted, cut, pasted and moved from the 10th page attempt because THIS page (11)'s tracing did not turn out as hoped, and I didn't want to have to do the whole page again.
Now that I have finally completed this page, the next one won't take so long or be so difficult. |

Sam is a big Bear-Hug fan (in comics and animation; though sometimes live-action is good too).
He likes his bearhug illustrations to show characters and moments that he wishes had, or believes should have, been included in their animated series (or comics). Other times the pictures are also ideas from his own concept idea for a comic book hero.
Like most things, the art - in quality and such - improves over time.
Although most of the pages are done on tracing paper with reused/altered material and some others are hand-drawn, in the end they are all worthwhile and seeing! |
