2016-08-30: A reset was performed today on the visit and visitor history. Visit and visitor history cleared - Tuesday August 30th 2016 (News ID: 1716)   [ Back to top ]

The server hosting the site has been very slow lately and it was determined that there were a few hiccups and performance problems on how the visits to each profiles were stored.

I had to clear them out, so yes, all the visit and visitor history will be cleared as of today (August 30 2016). They will start piling up again as soon as someone checks out your profile or when you check out someone's profile. For some reason, the maintenance script I had to clean them up periodically stopped working and the disk space almost reached its full usage.

I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

2014-02-09: Yes, there was some downtime lately because my hosting service was performing an upgrade on the server housing this website. Server downtime - Sunday February 9th 2014 (News ID: 1589)   [ Back to top ]

Yes, there was some downtime lately.. the site was completely unavailable because my hosting service was performing a software upgrade on the machine that is housing this website.

I know... I should have announced this before rather than after, but I completely lost sight of it. Things should be back to normal now.... well almost. Occasionally, when the server load is too high, it seems that the site will get disconnected for a brief moment. This usually lasts a few minutes. Just retry later and you should be able to reconnect to the site.

In the future, I'll make sure to report maintenance windows longer than one hour ahead of time.

2012-10-03: There is a big backlog of pending items waiting to be approved. Big backlog - Wednesday October 3rd 2012 (News ID: 1483)   [ Back to top ]

I admit there's a big backlog of pending items, some of which are waiting to be approved for more than one week.

Backlog on profiles have the highest priority and are normally all processed after 24 hours, with some exceptional cases, 72 hours, but the rest of the site (uploads, links, database entries, reviews) can take much longer.

My schedule has been pretty booked this week and last week. I have little time left for the site, so I apologize in advance for these long delays. This is of course just a temporary issue. Things should go back to normal hopefully this week-end.

Thank you for your understanding.

2012-03-11: There has been a bit of downtime as of late. Downtime - Sunday March 11th 2012 (News ID: 1429)   [ Back to top ]

There has been a bit of downtime as of late. My hosting service is performing upgrades on the server housing bearhugger.net, meaning hopefully, better performance, faster queries and improved security... again, hopefully

Some additional downtime is to be expected in the next few days. If you get an error, simply come back later. I apologize in advance for any inconvenience.

2011-01-27: The site was under unexpected maintenance on Jan 25 and Jan 26 2011 due to a server upgrade by the hosting service. Site maintenance - Thursday January 27th 2011 (News ID: 1307)   [ Back to top ]

The hosting service housing bearhugger.net has upgraded the server on Tuesday January 25 and this has caused all pages and sections to display errors because of a change in configuration.

I took the matter in my own hands and modified the pages manually to bring them back online. As of right now, all sections should be back to normal, but I wouldn't be surprised if some pages are still not working. If you encounter any pages with errors on them, please contact me immediately with the link to the page and I will award you +100,000 bearhug points for your trouble.

Please be patient as I gradually restore the service on each section.

2010-05-27: Any inbox messages earlier than January 2009 will be deleted from the site. Deleting ALL messages older than 1 year - Thursday May 27th 2010 (News ID: 1204)   [ Back to top ]

I'm aware that the whole site is pretty slow right now. I will need to do a cleanup and a maintenance of the database.

To help make it lighter and faster, I will be deleting all messages that are older than January 2009 (meaning any messages that are of year 2008 or earlier will be wiped out).

Also from now on, I will establish a script that will periodically delete messages that are older than 1 year. For example, a message written on March 3rd 2008 will be deleted on March 3rd 2009. So, a message written today will be removed on May 27 2011.

Please make sure you make a copy of the messages from your inbox that you wish to keep.

2009-03-01: Bearhug Uploads are now back online. Uploads are back online - Sunday March 1st 2009 (News ID: 902)   [ Back to top ]

The Bearhug Uploads are now back online.

I disabled a site enhancement I was working on and I also disabled 3 other features which were putting pressure on the database. These are the disabled features:

- Uploads that users did not rate yet
- Uploads with no locks that users did not rate yet
- Top Voters

The impact of this change is minimal in terms of functionality and these features were underused anyway. In terms of performance increase, the absence of the above queries will help prevent the server box from spiking.

However, this may not be the complete reason behind the issue, so don't be surprised if the site goes back down with "Your account is suspended page".

When they say that, the site hosting service basically means that "Bearhugger.net is down and needs maintenance to improve performance".

Based on the results of this change, I may disable other features, but again, the impact should remain minimal.

2009-02-27: There are site performance problems that caused a 2-day downtime. Unfortunately, more downtime may be coming. Wrestling Personals and other components are still up. Site performance issues - Friday February 27th 2009 (News ID: 901)   [ Back to top ]

The site was down for about 2 days because of performance issues. I had to cut down half the queries I was making to the database, so I decided to take down Bearhug Uploads temporarily. The Wrestling Personals and other components of the site are still up. However, please note that many of the online components are dependent on Bearhug Uploads, so some parts may be broken until the Uploads are brought back up.

In the next days, I will try to find out what I can do to resolve the performance problems on my site and I'll continue to report here the progress on this issue.

I apologize for any inconvenience encountered during this downtime.

2009-01-13: They were server upgrades that were scheduled some time last week. Server upgrade - Tuesday January 13th 2009 (News ID: 874)   [ Back to top ]

There were server upgrades that were scheduled some time last week and I am noticing right now that a lot of site pages are now loading much faster than before. For example, profiles that were previously taking 11 seconds to load due to the huge list of favorites and admirers are now taking a mere 1 or 2 seconds to load. Sure, the trade-off was a little down time and the fear that everything was going AWOL, but everything became fine near the end of the maintenance.

I'd like to give a big thank you to our website provider, BlueHost, for performing this upgrade, migrating the site and letting everyone here enjoy faster browsing and surfing, on top of improving the access speed to the databases.

So, here goes: if you guys are looking for a good, efficient and reliable web site provider, then the company above has one extra vote from me. Their packages are affordable and they give you advanced control to the site with tools like Postgres, PHP, CGI, Perl and much much more. No, it's not free, but it surely beats having pop ups appear or banners clutter up your pages (i.e. Tripod, Geocities, etc.).

2008-11-12: There is a currently a backlog of new uploads, database entries and links pending. Backlog - Wednesday November 12th 2008 (News ID: 839)   [ Back to top ]

There is currently a backlog of new uploads, database entries and links pending. I can't approve them right away, because I need to do several modifications to the site and my main computer is currently down.

These updates along with the new ones that will be submitted today and tomorrow will be processed hopefully by the end of this week.

So if you have submitted something and it still hasn't showed up, it's expected.

2008-10-23: The site experience a little downtime during the week. Time will be invested during the next few weeks to improve the performance of the site. Downtime experienced - Thursday October 23rd 2008 (News ID: 829)   [ Back to top ]

The site experienced a little downtime during the week. This was caused by site performance issues.

I will invest time during the next couple of weeks to improve the performance of the site. Meanwhile, it is possible that some pages or sections may be unaccessible. If that happens, you can just come back later and re-try again.
